As water evaporates in a cooling tower, dissolved solids (and suspended solids) remain behind. These solids concentrate and increase the scaling, corrosion, and fouling potential of the water.

Pretreatment Water Treatment For Cooling Towers

Multimedia pressure filterers are designed to reduce turbidity and some colloids (measured as SDI) in water for cooling water treatment system. These filterers can remove particles down to about 10 microns in size. If a coagulant is added to the filterer influent stream, reduction of particles down to 1-2 microns can sometimes be accomplished. 


Typical removal efficiency for multimedia pressure filterers is about 50% of particles in the 10–15 micron size range. Influent turbidity for RO pretreatment is limited to about 10 NTU for cooling water treatment. At turbidity greater than 10 NTU, these filters may backwash too frequently to provide consistent affluent quality at reasonable run lengths. For this purpose, sand, activated carbon filters can be use in water treatment for cooling towers. And filter media can be changed or make multimedia bed and impurities can be removed.

 

Sodium softeners are used to treat RO influent water to remove soluble hardness (calcium, magnesium, barium, and strontium) that can form scale on RO membranes at cooling water treatment. Once known as sodium zeolite softeners, zeolites have been replaced with synthetic plastic resin beads. For sodium softeners, these resin beads are strongly acidic cation (SAC) polystyrene resin in the sodium form.

Reverse osmosis industrial water treatment systems are the process by which an applied pressure, greater than the osmotic pressure, is exerted on the compartment that once contained the high-concentration solution. This pressure forces water to pass through the membrane in the direction reverse to that of osmosis. Water now moves from the compartment with the high-concentration solution to that with the low concentration solution. In this manner, relatively pure water passes through membrane into the one compartment while dissolved solids are retained in the other compartment. Hence, the water in the one compartment is purified or “demineralized,” and the solids in the other compartment are concentrated or dewatered. And this process is very suitable for cooling water treatment application.

1. Raw water pump-- provide the pressure to quartz sand filter/activated carbon filter.

2. Quartz sand filter--get rid of turbidity, suspended matter, organic matter, colloid, etc.

3. Active carbon filter--Remove the color, free chloride, organic matter, harmful matter, etc.

4. Softener resin --exchange "ions" of calcium and magnesium with the most common and easiest method.

5. Micron filter--prevent large particles, bacteria, viruses into RO membrane, accuracy is 1µm or 5 µm,

6. High pressure pump--Provide the high pressure to RO membrane.

7.RO system-- main part of the plant. The RO membrane's desalting rate can reach 99%, removing over 99% ions.
